We are pleased to announce that Humana has given an award to CSD so our advocate can help the Deaf Community understand their medical conditions better. Mary Kay Studer will be available to meet with people before doctor and medical appointments, during and after appointments. By January 1, 2011 our website will contain health related information in ASL and we will also have a media center with dvds on health topics in ASL for you to come and view. In the meantime, please come in and see Mary Kay. She will work with interpreters and medical professional and help break down language barriers. Please call her VP# 513-206-9330 to learn more about this. There is no charge.
Humana Communities Benefit awarded HSDC $100,000 to reduce health disparities in underserved populations in October 2010. In this case, we are working to improve health literacy in the Deaf Community, those individuals for whom American Sign Language is their first, and primary language. The Center is pleased to offer, at no charge, educational seminars regarding linguistic differences between English and ASL, cultural issues in Deafness, barriers to health literacy and how to overcome these barriers.
