Developmental Speech And Language Milestones

0-3 months 
  • Quiets/smiles when spoken to 
  • Cries vary for different needs 

4-6 months 
  • Responds to changes in tone of voice 
  • Vocalizes sounds of pleasure and discontentment, Babbling sounds are more speech-like 

7-12 months 
  • Enjoys games like peek-a-boo and recognizes common item words (e.g. cup, shoe) 
  • Babbling has long/short groups of sounds (e.g. tatata bibibib) and imitates speech sounds and intonation - At 12 months, child may have 1-2 words (e.g. mama, dada, bye-bye). Words may be unclear 

12-24 months 
  • Points to a few body parts 
  • Follows simple commands (roll the ball) 
  • Uses more words each month 
  • Use sentence like imitation using adult-like prosody 
  • Eventually start putting 2 words together (no juice, more mommy) 

24-36 months 
  • Understand difference between the meaning of come contrasting words (stop-go, big—little) 
  • Uses 2-3 word sentences 
  • Often directs attention to objects or asks for them by naming them
