Charitable Services Program

The Charitable Services Program (CSP) is at the heart and soul of the Hearing Speech and Deaf Center. While we excel at the provision of state-of-the-art clinical care for persons with speech/language and hearing disorders, as well as interpreting and advocacy for persons who are Deaf, we recognize that people with financial resources can choose from a variety of providers. There is a large segment of our community who are not as fortunate. These people are the working poor; retirees living on social security or meager pensions; families who may be paying out of pocket for catastrophic medical expenses.

During 2004, more than 1000 individuals benefited from the Charitable Services
Program. Assistance ranged from a hearing test for a baby to determine if she had
hearing loss, to a sign language interpreter facilitating a hospital visit for an elderly
woman who is Deaf, and speech therapy for a little boy who stutters.

We have a variety of donors and funding sources that assist us in reaching our goal of "Better Communication for All". Take, for example, the Wilder Trust. This permanently restricted endowment was created by the late Edna Wilder, to provide hearing aids to persons who are indigent. Over the 45 years this fund has been in existence, we have dispensed approximately 2000 hearing aids to people who would not otherwise be
able to enjoy the sounds of life. A companion program, to provide Assistive Listening Devices for the indigent has been supported by the Bahmann Foundation for the past two years. A private donor provides financial support for the summer camp we run for children who are Deaf and for children of Deaf parents. With the help of an Anonymous Donor, we have provided 25 people with speech/language pathology and audiology services. Our Karp Fund, established by family and friends in honor of community leader Jay Karp has been in existence for more than eight years and supplies pediatric audiology devices and services for poor children in our community. The Mayerson Foundation supports after school interpreting for children who are Deaf so they can enjoy activities such as Boy and Girl Scouts like any other child. Our Center would not be the community resource we are without these very special people and foundations. The need grows for these services every year. The need for support grows as well. It is our goal to meet the needs of all, because we believe that "Communication is a basic, essential human right."
