What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) & How Does it Affect me?

The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the law that ensures a person who is Deaf or hard of hearing has equal access to services. Employers, local and state government, and public places must obey the law. There are three parts (or Titles) to the ADA.

Title I – Ensures accessible communication in the workplace.

Some services they can do to comply with the law are:
  • Qualified Sign Language Interpreters
  • C-Print Captioning
  • TTY
  • Video Relay
  • Visual Alarms – Like Flashing Lights for Fire Alarms
  • Amplified Telephone
  • Telephone That Can Be Used with a Hearing Aid
Title II – Ensures accessible communication at local and state government. All programs provided by cities, counties and state agencies and schools must obey the law.

Title III – Ensures accessible communication at businesses.

Some types of places that must do this:
  • Banks
  • Hotels
  • Theaters
  • Doctors’ and Lawyers’ offices
  • Libraries
  • Restaurants
