Community Services for the Deaf (CSD)

Established as a department within the Center in 1976, CSD is the only full-service, comprehensive program serving people who are Deaf and hard of hearing in the tri-state area. As one of only 13 state supported Community Services for the Deaf (CCD) in Ohio, we operate 365 days per year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day to meet the needs of those we serve.

Our certified, professional sign language interpreters have skills that take them into the courtroom, the delivery room and any other place where a person who is Deaf and a hearing person need to communicate. Our interpreting services are available for individuals and groups.

Interpreters are continuously sharpening their skills and participate in advanced continuing education such as a year long "legal training" course held at the Center.

C-Print
is a new service provided to the community via CSD. This computer-aided speech-to-print transcription system is used in classrooms and professional settings to facilitate communication.

A Deaf Advocate is on staff to assist people with independent living skills (getting a drivers license, opening a bank account, filling out complex forms), understanding their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and employment-job coaching.

Sign Language Classes are offered at the Center and throughout the community for individuals, groups and businesses.

"Baby Sign" Classes are taught to parents of hearing babies. Research indicates that children are ready to "talk" before they can speak and using very basic sign language (milk, more, momma, dada, bye bye) can alleviate frustration and enhance communication. Classes are available throughout the community throughout the year, and can be individualized or brought to your group, activity, etc.

HSDC employs a Regional Deaf Mental Health Coordinator, a position originally created by and funded through a grant from the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati. The coordinator works with mental health professionals in the tri-state area who serve patients who are Deaf. Known to be fragmented and not always culturally sensitive, this effort is to enhance mental health programs and services for children and adults in the tri-state area. The coordinator works directly with an Advisory Board with members from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky who are professionals and consumers, who are both Deaf and hearing.

In 2006 a new service will be rolled out called "I-O" or Interpreting On-Line. Utilizing state of the art video equipment and high-speed internet connections, we can sit in the office and interpret all over the country, provided that the person at the other end has the correct equipment.

Community Outreach and Education is also provided by CSD. Topics such as the ADA, Deaf Culture, Sign Language and Technology are offered.

A Deaf Advisory Board meets at HSDC several times per year and is comprised of consumers who are Deaf and family members of people who are Deaf. These volunteers advise CSD about topics of interest and of concern to the Deaf Community at large.
