TESTING SERVICES
Certified
and licensed audiologists work with state of the art
hearing testing instrumentation to identify hearing
problems in people of all ages. Staff provide service
at our 3 offices and around the tri-state at area nursing
homes, assisted living facilities and schools.
Evaluations
are conducted in a sound treated test suite for persons
of all ages, including newborns. Otoacoustic emissions
testing is used with young children and difficult to
test populations. Hearing assessments are also conducted
in conjunction with pediatric speech-language evaluations
to rule out hearing loss as a contributing factor in
a speech-language delay/disorder.
Services
that are delivered in the community include hearing
screenings of preschool children, school aged children
and adults. These can occur at health fairs, senior
centers, schools, etc.
Portable equipment is also brought to nursing homes
to complete full evaluations for patients who can not
easily be transported to the Center.

| HEARING
AID SERVICES: |
|
| Once
a hearing loss has been documented, patients and families are
guided through the hearing aid fitting process. We are happy
to provide consultation to people who may have obtained their
testing elsewhere, provided the testing has been conducted within
the past 6 months and testing was conducted in a sound treated
booth. Our offices are equipped with the latest technology to
provide the very best care
at all levels of cost and sophistication.
Center
philosophy is that there is NOT one best hearing aid for everyone.
Therefore, we have accounts with most hearing aid manufacturers
and after consultation with the patient/family a decision
is made regarding size, style, brand and technology level.
|
|
| We
offer basic, conventional hearing aids as well as top of the
line, digital technology with multiple microphones and other
options. We dispense all sizes of custom products, from the
very smallest (completely in the canal) to the full size (in
the ear) hearing aid as well as cosmetically discreet behind
the ear models.
Hearing
instruments that are newer to the market offer improvements
in speech discrimination in noise as well as improvements
to such problems as feedback (squealing of hearing aids) and
occlusion (sensation that you are talking in a barrel). If
you have not had a consultation recently, you should do so
today!
The
Center has programs available for people of every economic
circumstance. Many of our patients are able to privately pay
for their hearing aids. For those that are not, we are a Medicaid
provider. There are a lot of people who fall in between those
two categories
and we are extremely grateful and proud
to supply hearing aids to those who need financial assistance
through our "Edna Wilder Fund". Miss Wilder established
a perpetual endowment at our Center to provide hearing aids
to people who would otherwise be unable to purchase them.
This program has been helping our community for over 40 years.

| ASSISTIVE
LISTENING DEVICES: |
|
|
Assistive
Listening Devices (ALDs) are non-hearing aid devices used
instead of or in addition to hearing aids. Very basically,
they are objects commonly used by normal hearing people that
have been modified to benefit those with varying degrees of
hearing loss
from mild to profound. Examples of such
include amplified telephones, vibrating alarm clocks, flashing
doorbells, etc. Typically devices are either amplified, visual,
vibrating
or a combination of all 3.
The
Center maintains a working display of all of the most popular
and best working devices. Make an appointment with our ALD
audiologist to come in and try some of these today. She will
take you through the room and evaluate what best meets your
need.
Business
and other institutions are also encouraged to consult with
our audiologists about making the workplace a barrier free
environment that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA).
Understanding
that these devices are critical for people to maintain independence,
we are fortunate to have funding from the Bahmann Foundation
to assist older adults who have financial concerns obtain
consultations and ALDs.

| EDUCATION
AND OUTREACH |
|
|
All
people obtaining hearing aids at HSDC are encouraged to attend
"hearing aid classes" to fully optimize the experience.
These classes are offered several times per year and are no
charge. We encourage communication partners to attend the
sessions as well.
As
a community resource, we believe strongly in bringing valuable
information about all aspects of Audiology to our neighbors.
Therefore, the following topics are available for presentation
to the community:
*Hearing
and Hearing Loss in children and available treatments
*Hearing Conservation
*Hearing Loss: causes and treatments
*Hearing Aids and Assistive Listening Devices
*Effective Communication Strategies for people with hearing
losses
